Death

What death costs you: the gold and durability penalties, what survives, and why dying in the Endless Delve is free.

On this page

Dying costs a cut of your gold and some durability on your worn gear. Everything else survives, and the hero fights on once you start combat again.

Gold and durability penalties

The amounts are fixed:

PenaltyValue
Gold lost on death10% of current gold
Durability lost on death10% of each equipped item’s max durability

Modifiers that change the penalty:

  • The Exploration skills Steel-Lined Pockets and Hardened Gear shrink the gold and durability loss (up to −75% each at level 100).
  • Indestructible items never lose durability on death.

What survives death

  • Hero level, attributes, and skills
  • Your items: bag, stash, and worn gear (apart from the durability cut above)
  • Training reputation (armour, weapon and shield classes)
  • Bedroom upgrades
  • Exploration Points and Exploration skills
  • Region Resonance levels and kill-counter progress
  • Region-quest claims and main-quest progress
  • Tile clears

Dying in the Endless Delve is free

The Delve is built to end in death — you climb until the depth outscales you — so the death penalty is waived inside it:

  • No gold loss and no durability loss, whatever your modifiers. The run simply ends and you are returned to the world with the character intact.

The wager is the run itself: the depth you reached is gone, and re-entering at a milestone costs Echoing Crystals. See The Endless Delve.

The death recap

Dying opens a death recap: the enemy that killed you with its rarity and level, the size of the lethal hit, the combat time for that run and in total, the gold and durability actually lost (each row is omitted when the loss was zero), and your running death count. A Delve death adds the depth you fell at and the Echoing Crystals that run earned, with an hourly rate.

A shortened version stays available afterwards on the Statistics screen under “Last death” — enemy, Delve depth if there was one, and the lethal hit. The recap lives for the current session; loading a save or starting a new character clears it.

Death while you are away

A death while you are away follows the same rules: the penalty above is taken and combat stops. The Offline Progress window on your return reports it, with the Delve depth for a Delve death.
