Death & Difficulty Modes
Softcore, Mediumcore, and Hardcore — what death costs you in each, plus durability and gold penalties.
On this page
At character creation you choose a death mode. The choice is permanent — you cannot change it later.
The three modes
| Mode | On death | Meta progression |
|---|---|---|
| Softcore | Lose 10% of current gold; equipped items lose 10% of their max durability. | Preserved. |
| Mediumcore | All gold, all inventory items, all equipped items, and all belt potions are wiped. Locked items are not spared. | Preserved. |
| Hardcore | The character is permanently locked — the save can no longer be loaded. The main menu shows a tombstone with your death level and the killing enemy’s level. | Frozen at time of death. |
What “meta progression preserved” covers
In Softcore and Mediumcore, the following all survive death:
- Hero level, attributes, and skills
- Bedroom upgrades
- Exploration Points and Exploration skills
- Region Resonance levels and kill-counter progress
- Region-quest claims and main-quest progress
- Tile clears
Gold and durability penalties
Softcore is the only mode with a partial penalty; the amounts are fixed:
| Penalty | Value |
|---|---|
| Gold lost on death | 10% of current gold |
| Durability lost on death | 10% of each equipped item’s max durability |
Modifiers that change the penalty:
- The Exploration skills Steel-Lined Pockets and Hardened Gear shrink the gold and durability loss (up to −75% each at level 100).
- Indestructible items never lose durability on death.
Death during offline catch-up
When the game replays missed offline time, a Mediumcore or Hardcore death stops the replay immediately so you see the moment of failure. Softcore deaths are simulated normally and do not halt the replay.
